Doug and Carol's Tip #4

I Feel the Need for Speed

I'm hearing a lot of the following type of statement lately at Fort Peck: "Man, every time I even come close to the bottom with my crank, jig or spinner, I either moss up or weed up." My answer to this is: Speed up!

With the recent rains, which, by the way are a welcome sight to Montana, the streams and rivers are all flowing above normal. This rainfall and subsequent draining into Fort Peck has caused the reservoir to come up approximately four feet in the last few weeks. This has caused what was just a few weeks ago shoreline weeds and grass to be covered by water. Guess what? That's where the fish are!!

Those of us that have fished Fort Peck for a number of years know that when the water is coming up-fish shallow. This shallow fishing presents some unique challenges. One of the more challenging questions is how to keep your bait or presentation from continually weeding or grassing up. One of my primary methods is to speed up the movement of the boat. When I'm pulling lindy rigs or spinners over weeds, I don't try to keep them on the bottom. I try to keep the bait above the weeds by increasing the speed of my boat. More speed keeps the bait higher in the water column and helps keep the bait clear of weeds, moss and grass.

It's been my recent experience that this is also exactly what the walleyes want. By the way, they are slamming the bait. They are telling me they are not bashful about coming out of those weeds and engulfing anything that goes by above them.

If the walleyes I have been catching at Fort Peck could talk, they would be saying "I Feel the Need for Speed" and those anglers who are listening are going to catch a lot of very good fish!!
