Stage is set for a great 2009

The summer of 2008 will be remembered as a great time to fish Fort Peck Reservoir -- especially if you're a jig fisherman. Water levels came up on the lake and flooded shoreline vegetation. The minnows and other forage fish responded with great spawns. So the walleyes headed in shallow after them.

The end result was good news all the way around. There was great walleye fishing for anglers pitching jigs into the flooded clover. There was plenty of food and walleyes were fat.

But perhaps the best news is that all those minnows were produced that fed literally all sizes of walleyes and sparked good growth. That means there should be a good carryover of walleyes to the summer of 2009. If we get a good carryover of water during the winter and boost reservoir levels with melting snowpack next spring......well, you couldn't ask for more from a fishing forecast.

Lake trout fishing was also good during 2008 and lakers staged off their spawning area along the face of Fort Peck Dam in the fall. The fall fishing was good. We'd expect the early spring fishing in 2009 to be just as good.

All in all, things are looking great for fishermen at Fort Peck Reservoir.
